Anchorage Cops Hang It All on the Line for Back-To-School

The beginning of a new school year can bring excitement and anxiety, especially for families struggling economically. From outgrowing last year’s clothes to wanting a fresh look, something as simple as returning to school can cause additional financial hardship. The Anchorage Cops for Community (AC4C) Clothesline Project provides families with the back-to-school clothing and school supplies they need so every student can begin the school year feeling ready.

“What makes this annual event so special goes far beyond the practicality of addressing a need for clothes and supplies,” said Katie Bailey, vice chair, AC4C. “It’s the community that truly shines before and during this event. The donations aren’t just from a few large retailers or sponsoring organizations but also from countless community members. So many, in fact, that this year’s Clothesline Project had the most donations to date!”

Matson Giving provided a cash donation of $10,000 in annual support of the organization's community events, including the “Back to School Carnival,” and loaned out a container for the second consecutive year. Outfitted with a coded lock, the container provided a central drop-off point where people and organizations could make donations around the clock with minimal coordination. The container also stored donated clothes before eager volunteers from Matson and other supporters could sort them.

“This year’s event drew between 1,400-1,500 people, the most ever,” said Bailey. “The ‘Back to School Carnival’ not only serves as a resource for students and their families as they get ready to start the school year, it’s also just good community fun.”
